just want to say thanks.

Thank you for being here. For being you as you are. For sharing your beauty and uniqueness with the world. For reading this. Thank you, for the times you offered love and support without an expectation of something in return. Thank you for showing up with kindness on days when you may have felt short-tempered. The world is a better, more interesting place because of your presence. And so, in case no one’s told you this lately I just wanted you to know.

This morning I walked out my back door into the crisp, cold morning air to catch a glimpse of the geese fly and honk overhead. I watched the frost melt off the grass and tree limbs as the sun rose from behind the clouds. And all at once, I felt overcome by a sense of joy for the beauty and tranquility of that moment. It was, as the poet Maggie Smith likes to say, “a beauty emergency.” A moment so breathe-takingly beautiful that we have no choice but to stop whatever we’re doing and take in the wonder of it all.

Now I know that right now many people, in fact I imagine most of us are dealing with painful, difficult things. Loss, grief, financial hardship, health struggles, family and relationship problems, you name it. I too know the depth of that pain and how terribly hard it can be to carry on despite it. So, I just want you to know if you’re struggling that I see you.

I also want to say, for all of you that are living with a pain that others can’t see that I want you to know that pain doesn’t have to rob us of moments of joy and beauty. Both emotions can exist at the same time. In fact, I think we need the joy and the beauty most when things are hard. It’s what reminds us that there is more to this life than pain. I believe that keeping a watchful eye out for and then stopping in our tracks to take in the joy and beauty around us will heal us and it will transmute the pain into light, if we allow it.

Let’s make a pact to allow it, shall we?

This Is What I Know with Jeanine Hughes is a reader-supported publication. THIS is the thing no one tells you. And it’s what you most need to know.

You, dear one, are your own sovereign being. You’re more than enough, just as you are right now. You’ve always been more than enough. You came to this life to experience it for yourself. That means you’re here to have your own experiences and to pursue your own dreams and aspirations. Contrary to what you’ve been told, you’re not here to live your life in servitude to another human no matter what their connection to you might be. And you’re not meant to be limited by anyone or anything else, unless you allow it. This means you must think for yourself, in all things. You must act on that information and that alone. THIS is what it means to be FREE and to love yourself. To do otherwise is to dishonor yourself and the incredible human that you are.

Now young one, before you beat yourself up for not knowing this and not living in this way up until now, I want you to know that it’s not your fault that you didn’t know. In fact, no one wants you to know this. Because when you know this about yourself and you live it, you’re not only free and comfortable with yourself, you’re limitless.

So why didn’t you know?

Because you were born into a patriarchy. One that’s been around for over 5000 years. The powers that control this system have been at this game for a long, long time and they’ve got it dialed.

And why don’t they want you to know this about yourself?

Well, because a patriarchal hierarchy’s objective is top-down control. Only men can hold real power in a patriarchal system. To ensure their grip on power they suppress and oppress those that are not men. Thinking for yourself, seeing yourself as independent and strong, not accepting limitation; these are all threats to their dominance and control of power. To guaranty their control, they rig the game. The best rigging is brainwashing, and they are masters at it. The system convinces you that it’s in your best interest to allow yourself to be held back and, you get extra credit for holding others back too.

Subscribe now

But because you didn’t know this you followed the rules as they’d been laid out for you. Even if in your gut you knew that this didn’t feel right. Nevertheless, those in control and those who’ve come before you (like your parents, teachers, coaches, ministers, friends and neighbors) assured you that following the rules of this game meant living a good life. With luck and hard work, you’d live the life of your dreams. They told you what is “good” and “right” under the rules and promised you that playing by them would lead to happiness and success. But that’s not all, to incentivize you and encourage you on this path you’re taught from a young age, before you even know language, that being “a good girl” gets rewards, and being a “bad girl” gets punishment.

And of course, like everyone born into this game you wanted approval, so it didn’t take you long to figure out that “good” also meant caring for others, even if it was at your own expense. In fact, the game gives bonus points for being “self-less” because if you can ignore and deny yourself completely (so that you no longer have your own identity, aka a “self”) under the rules of this game you’re somehow winning. You see how this works?!

You also learn that being “a good girl” means “being quiet”, “not making waves”, “turning the other cheek”, and just “getting along.” “Power” you’re told is “bad” – but only if you’re a girl. If you’re a boy, “power” is good and encouraged. And while we’re on the topic, the same thing holds true for “anger.” It’s totally acceptable for boys to express “anger” but unattractive when it’s expressed by a girl.

Oh, and speaking of “attraction”, this patriarchal game requires that you focus almost exclusively on physical beauty to determine your worth relative to other women. After all, the big “win” for women (according to the game) is to attract and secure a mate, and then to produce children. After which your job is to abandon yourself completely in service to caregiving of your family and others. Now, don’t forget that under the rules of the game “winning” in the physical beauty department means you’re in constant competition with all other women. Therefore, it’s critical that you keep up on changing beauty trends because the rules of what is considered beautiful are like shifting sands, constantly changing with the trends. Oh, and if you somehow manage to nail one of these trends you can rest assured that before long the trend will change again and then you’ll go back to feeling like you don’t measure up. And you wonder why you don’t really feel like you’re winning?

But, despite all this change there is one constant in the beauty rules department and it’s this. You must not age. Aging in this patriarchal game is not only considered to be unattractive it is also a clear indicator of female irrelevance. And of course, those that are deemed “irrelevant” have no further value in the game.

Share

So, younger self, if your head is spinning trying to keep up with all these ridiculous rules just know, that this too is by design. It’s also part of the game. It’s part of the mind control. The manipulation. You see if you’re distracted and overwhelmed trying to do what’s “good’ and “right” and “successful” under these rules you’ll live in a constant state of longing and self-loathing and you’ll feel powerless to do anything about it. This is by intent. You’re not a threat to the system and you’re not competition if you’re brainwashed to believe that you’re limited. And you’re especially easy to control if you’re willing to play by these rules and hold yourself and other women back.

Ok, so now I’ve said the thing. I’ve called out the elephant in the room. I’ve told you the truth that no one wants you to know. You’ve been cheated and manipulated by a system that told you that you could have what you want, but it had no intention of ever allowing you to have it.

So now what? How do you fix it? How do you reclaim your power and independence and freedom?

For starters by having compassion for yourself. You’ve unwittingly spent your whole life running a 100-yard dash against an opponent who had a 75-yard head start (and who’s delusional enough to brag incessantly to you and everyone else about how fast they are.) It’s not you. It was never you. It’s the system. You’ve been crushing it this whole time. Even though the game was rigged.

The next thing to remember is that it’s just a “game”. A game whose rules were created by imperfect humans like you and me. They weren’t handed down by God and anyone who suggests otherwise is lying. But you don’t need to believe me on this one, just ask yourself “are the people and organizations that tell me these rules are divinely handed down the beneficiaries of the rules being this way?” If the answer is yes that should tell you all you need to know.

The bottom line in all this is that these are simply the rules that worked for the folks who came before us, and until now we’ve just blindly accepted them as truth without every questioning why. But news flash: this game, like every game only exists if we are willing to play. And the rules only matter if we think they matter. Our thoughts create our reality. So, if I don’t like the rules, if I think it’s unfair, if I believe that I’m being cheated and manipulated, I CAN call bull shit. I CAN stop giving this system power over me. I CAN decide that this game doesn’t work for me this way.

Subscribe now

Now, doing that can look different ways. Sure, I can stand up and yell “F-You I’m out” and turn the game upside down. I can also be more stealth and “quiet-quit”. After all, no one knows what I’m thinking behind my smile except me. No one knows what I know and believe except me. Deciding for myself what’s right for me, what rules I’ll accept, and then acting on those choices and those alone can be a very powerful and subversive act of rebellion.

You see, any way you choose to go about it, making a commitment to think for yourself and act in alignment with what is true for you and what you want to experience here in this life is what it really means to be FREE. This is what it means to live as your own sovereign being. This is you honoring and loving you. No one else will honor and respect you until you do this for yourself first.

So dear, sweet younger self, this is what I wish I knew when I was your age. That said, I’m so grateful to know it and live it for myself now.

Remember, we are limitless.

It's Not You. how hard you try, no matter what length you go to that you’re never measuring up? It’s never enough. You never feel like, ah, I’ve figured it out. I’ve arrived. I’m good!

If you feel that way, first of all I want you to know it’s not true. Ok? YOU ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH. You’ve always been enough. I also want you to know that feeling that way isn’t your imagination. It’s by design. We live in a society that wants to keep us in a state of self-loathing. We live in a culture that wants us to feel bad about ourselves. It wants us to feel like we’re deficient and that we don’t measure up and that we’re not enough. It wants us to compare ourselves to one another. It wants us to envy and snipe and sneer and take each other down. You see, when we feel bad about ourselves we beat ourselves up, we hold ourselves back, and we feel weak. We feel so powerless that we listen to everyone around us to think for us. We’re much easier to control this way. We’re willing to do it to ourselves.

Share

On top of that when we feel like we’re not enough we buy more stuff to feel better, or to somehow “improve” ourselves with the idea that if we’re “more” - more youthful, more beautiful, more fit, more fashionable, more successful, more impressive and so on, that THEN we’ll be enough. But you see being “enough” in our society is a moving target. The rules are constantly changing. You’ll never be enough playing this game. It’s all great for the economy. Not so good for your bank account. And, all of that is by design.

We need to wake up and see this for what it is and then make our own choice. Is this a game we want to continue to play? If it is, I can tell you that you are in for a lifetime of misery, self-loathing and longing.

The sexiest and most courageous thing you can do is to be YOU and own that. There is nothing more powerful than a person who’s good with themselves. A person who likes themselves isn’t looking for someone else’s validation. They’re good with their choices and that’s enough for them. They know this cultural game of popularity isn’t real. It’s literally an ever changing collection of man-made rules for what’s cool and what’s not. But here’s the thing we often forget about rules. Rules only matter if we collectively agree to follow them. So, why not call bull shit?

After all, you’re already more than enough.

Big love to you,

J.
<p class="button-wrapper" you. Maybe you know people who meditate and rave about it. Maybe you’ve tried it, but you weren’t sure you were doing it right or you just struggled to sit still so you quit. Maybe you think meditation is for crunchy, tree-hugging, woo-woo types and not normal, everyday folks like you.

Does any of this resonate? If so, let me start by debunking the myths:

I’m not good at meditating, it’s not for me.

There is a “right way” to meditate.

It takes a long time before you see a benefit.

Meditation is just for spiritual, woo-woo types.

Here’s the truth:

There is no such thing as being “good at it”. Some people just find it easier to quiet their mind than others. But anyone can do this. Meditation is for ANYONE who “wants” to feel less anxious, less stressed, more grounded, more at peace with themselves, and more confident. And it’s for anyone who wants to attract more abundance while doing less to get it.

Better still, it doesn’t have to be a significant time commitment. You can meditate for a minute, or 5 minutes a day. And you can do it ANYWHERE.

You don’t have to be a spiritual practitioner. Meditation holds enormous benefits for everyone including normal, everyday folks like you and me.

Speaking of me, as someone with ADHD and therefore the attention span of a golden retriever, I assure you that if I can develop a meditation practice anyone can. Personally, I’ve found it to be incredibly healing. It has literally changed my life. Which is why I created this beginner’s guide to help you get started on your own meditation practice.

</line>

8 Tips To Start Meditating Right Now:

1. Time

It’s important to set yourself up for success here so in the beginning start small. Set yourself up for a win so that you’ll be motivated to keep going. You might start by carving out 1-5 minutes of time, daily. Honestly it doesn’t matter how long you meditate; it just matters that you do it. This is you showing yourself that this is important to you. You’re proving to yourself that you’re willing to prioritize your health and wellbeing in this way. Establishing a set amount of time just creates a boundary so that you don’t feel burdened by this new activity in the beginning.

2. Space

As for space, it’s ideal if you can create a comfortable, quiet space that’s uncluttered and free of distractions as your dedicated meditation space. But if that’s not possible you can certainly improvise. Meditation can literally happen ANYWHERE. I’ve meditated standing in the shower, sitting in my parked car, on a train, on a bus, in my office, sitting on a park bench, sitting in the waiting room of a doctor’s office and in a million other places. It just comes down to “wanting” to do this for yourself. Consider it an act of self-love. You are honoring you by finding a way to prioritize this for yourself.

3. Consistency.

The key to building any new habit is consistency and creating a meditation practice, as the name suggests, takes practice. You must build a habit of it. I’ve found that a great hack to build a new habit is to stack it next to an existing habit. And better yet, stack it next to something you do that you really enjoy. Here’s an example. When I wanted to make a habit of meditating, I knew that it would be hard to find the quiet time in a house filled with kids and pets and all the stuff. So, I decided that I would get up a little bit earlier each day before my family was up and about, and before checking my phone for texts, emails and news alerts. And to make sure that I got up and out of bed I stacked this habit next to my habit of making coffee in the morning. - Something I relish. So, I got up, I made coffee, and I sat on the floor in the family room in front of the fireplace and I spent the next few minutes meditating. And I’ll tell you I was terrible at it. I was distracted and fidgety and I struggled to focus. But I was consistent and with time I got better. And in the end this has made all the difference.

4. Have a notebook or post-it nearby.

In my experience a big challenge in the beginning is staying focused on the present moment and not “thinking”. Not thinking about my to-do list, not replaying a conversation I had with someone the day before, not thinking about the birthday card I forgot to send or the call I need to make. You get the picture.

When you find your mind wandering off down one of these random paths you want to just notice that, let the thought go for now, and reset back to the present. But you may be wondering, what if it’s an important thought that you’re afraid you’ll forget? Well then write it down on the post-it or the notebook. This way, you don’t lose the thought, and you can let it go from your mind for now knowing it hasn’t vanished like a cloud that just floated away. However, I highly recommend NOT using your phone to make the note to yourself. The reason being is that once you look at your phone, you’ll be distracted by all the other stuff on the phone, which makes it that much harder to reset and refocus on the meditation.

5. Guided Meditation Apps.

These are great tools for beginners. When I started meditating, I focused my efforts here because I loved having a voice guide me through the meditation. These apps provide guided meditations, mantras, positive affirmations and other wellness tools. They’re a set time, they’re easy to follow. Headspace, Calm and Insight Timer are among the most popular.

6. Box Breath Meditation.

This is super simple. Find a quiet comfortable space, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, hold for another 4 seconds and repeat. Do this for 1 minute. This can even be a great little exercise to implement to lower your heart rate and help reduce anxiety when you find yourself in a stressful situation as it can really help us to bring our thoughts back to the present moment especially when a situation has us “future tripping” or obsessing about something in the past.

7. Mantra Meditation.

Mantra meditations focus on repeating a word, phrase or sound as a tool to get the mind to focus on the present and remove outside distraction.

For example, you can say “ohm.” You can repeat an affirmation. A phrase I like to use to settle into meditation is this. Say to yourself, “be still and know that I am God.” “Be still and know that I am.” Be still and know.” “Be still.” “Be.”

8. Meditating WITHOUT Sitting in Meditation.

If sitting still to meditate is not your thing, no worries! I got you! There are so many things you can do that are meditative.

Here are some examples:

Walk the dog or walk by yourself. (But remember, no talking on the phone, listening to a podcast, etc. Just listen to your breath, the sound of your feet hitting the ground, the sounds around you.)

Gardening.

Cooking.

Taking a long shower.

Folding laundry.

Driving your car in silence.

Hitting golf balls.

Hitting tennis balls against a wall.

Yoga or stretching.

Drawing, painting, creating art.

The key here is this. These are all activities that we do during the day that don’t require us to focus on each step of the process. Instead, our subconscious knows how to do these tasks so we’re essentially operating on auto pilot. This allows us to be engaged in something without having to really think about it. I’ve found this can be a powerfully relaxing and effective way to get out of our heads and into our hearts so that we can clear our minds, de-stress and “feel” the spiritual guidance we’re getting. Because often, and especially in the beginning of a meditation practice we tend to get stuck in our heads. We intellectualize too much. The intention of meditation is more about tapping into what we “feel” not what we “think.” So, having a mindless activity to occupy us can help that flow more easily.

The bottom line.

There is no “right way” to do this. There is only “your way”. This is between you and you. Whatever you’re doing is right for you. So be kind to yourself. No judging, criticizing, or berating yourself here. This is not a competition. This is about you developing a more intimate relationship with yourself. As you no doubt know, healthy intimacy in any relationship requires acceptance, patience, and forgiveness. So, give that to yourself.

I hope this helps you as you get started on your own life changing meditation practice.

Have a question? especially in the times in which we’re living we all want to feel like we’ve got people in our corner, that we have someone who has our back. Often, we hear in private, or we say in private to folks that we understand their pain and that we’re their ally, and that we do have their back. But you know, it’s one thing to say in private that you see that someone is being treated unfairly or an injustice is being done and that that sucks, and it’s a whole other thing to be willing to take an uncomfortable public stand in their defense.

For instance, in a social setting, are you willing to stand up and lock arms essentially with someone who needs support and say to others “this is wrong” and be willing to have some arrows flung your way for doing it, or to be willing to receive some short-term pain because you realize that in the long run, it’s a win-win? Are you willing to use your social capital in this way because the person that you’re supporting will benefit from your support and that in turn will be good for all of you? You see what I mean? That’s a whole other thing.

Now, unfortunately something else to recognize is that you can have people that love you who are NOT actually YOUR ally.

Here’s an example. Imagine that you’re in a relationship with someone who votes in a certain way because they’ll save a couple bucks on taxes. And they justify that decision because they say that “WE will save a couple bucks on taxes” even though, that vote also means that maybe YOUR rights are compromised.

You see, that’s a situation where the person says that they’re your ally and they understand that it would be really unfair for your rights to be compromised and they think that sucks, but they’re not willing to take any short-term pain by NOT voting to save a couple bucks on taxes because it’s in THEIR best interest to do that. That person may say they love you, but they are NOT your ally.

And the last thought that I wanted to share related to this is, are you even YOUR OWN ally? Are you willing to take an uncomfortable public stand in your own defense and risk short-term pain, - having some arrows flung your way because you know that in the long run, you’re better off, because you sleep well at night knowing that you stood up for you? Because you see, at the end of the day, if you’re not willing to do that for yourself, why would you expect someone else to do it for you?

Standing up for ourselves, and others, is an act of love. Our gut knows this. Our gut knows the right thing to do. Listen. And take a step. Taking a step, even a baby step is you providing yourself with proof that you are strong, and you love you.

THIS is how we move forward as a people and a nation.

Share

xo Jeanine

This Is What I Know with Jeanine Hughes is a reader-supported publication. was Thursday.

I stood next to the gurney as we waited for the IV to work its magic.

Then, out of the blue, he turned to me, his eyes wide with panic. “Mom, I can’t breathe!” “What?” I asked. “Aaahhh! Aaaahhhh!” he screamed. And then, silence. I looked into his eyes. They were totally dilated. His face was frozen. He looked so frightened.

He was gone.

I yelled to the nurses. One came and jumped on top of him doing chest compressions with such force that his 20-year-old body heaved up in the air and then flopped back down on the gurney like a rag doll. Again, and again. My God I thought, they must be breaking his ribs. One nurse yelled his name. Another called to him “Kieran, can you hear me?” Kieran, stay with me Bud.” “Kieran hang on!” Medical staff rushed in from all directions.

As I watched all of this in utter disbelief, I felt someone standing beside me. I turned to look. It was an older woman. She was smiling at me. But I don’t recognize her. Confused, I looked down at her lapel. Her name tag said, Chaplin. I sighed and looked back up at her face. “Do you want to pray?” she asked.

“No! No. Not now.” I looked back at Kieran and thought, I’m not giving up. Not yet. Praying, last rites, it feels like giving up. And I can’t do that. I can’t fucking believe this is happening! This can’t be how this story ends. It’s just Thursday.

I’m not sure how much time passed. It was all so chaotic. Somehow, they managed to get a pulse and intubate him. By now, his organs had shut down. They wheeled him to the ICU on life support.

Two days earlier he and I were chatting on the phone. He was living in the Rocky Mountains a couple hours from home, working a summer job as a hiking guide. Climbing 14e’rs for a living. He coughed incessantly, his voice sounded raspy and weak, he said he felt like crap. He sounded awful. The more we chatted the more anxious and worried I started to feel. He was an otherwise totally healthy guy, but something felt off. I said, “Kieran I think you need to come home and get checked out. Can you take a day off and come home?” He just brushed it off and said he’d be fine. “It’s just the flu” he said. But the more we talked the more worried I became and then finally I just blurted out, “Kieran you need to come home, I’m afraid you’re gonna die!” I startled myself by saying this. Not because I didn’t believe it. Because I did. I know that sounds crazy and over the top but that’s what I was feeling inside me in that moment. I was just shocked that I said it out loud.

He came home the next day, not so much because of what I’d said on the phone. I know he thought I was being dramatic and overprotective. I suspect he just wanted a little TLC. I can’t say that his being home made me feel any more at ease. I still felt anxious and kind of panicked. Something was wrong. I just knew it. So, that afternoon I took him to the ER for the IV.

We had no reason to think that this day wasn’t just another Thursday. Until it wasn’t. But if you’ve been there you know, there is no text alert to warn us that life as we know it is about to change. It just happens.

Subscribe now

So, why am I telling you this story?

Because there is something I want you to know and it is this. It is so vitally important that we learn to listen to our gut, to trust what it says and to act on that knowing. Not just in the case of a potential medical emergency, but in ALL things big and small. THIS is how we get through the tough stuff and keep ourselves safe. THIS is how we hold onto our freedom - by listening within. By learning to trust and believe in ourselves. By thinking for ourselves and deciding for ourselves what is right for us and us alone. THIS is our power.

Sadly, most of us don’t do this. It’s not your fault. We live in a culture that teaches us from birth not to listen to our gut. We’re taught to question ourselves, to deny and distrust our inner knowing and instead to listen to and put our trust in everyone and everything around us. We’re encouraged to let the media, and our friends or family, or our partner, or our minister, or our teachers, or coaches tell us what to think, what to do and how to feel. This is why we feel powerless. This is why we feel that we don’t have control over our life. This is why you feel an uncomfortable disconnect inside you that you can’t quite put your finger on. Because you are disconnected from yourself. You ignore and suppress the power you hold inside you.

Here's what I know about letting the voices all around me tell what to do. They are NOT me. They don’t know what’s right for me. They may be well meaning but they have their own agenda and their own biases. It’s more likely that they’re telling me what is right for THEM. Only I know what’s right for me. But more than that, none of them must live with the consequences of my decisions or the events that happen to me.

In the case of the story I just shared, plenty of folks told me “Oh he’ll be fine.” “He’s a healthy 20-year-old boy who’s just run down.” “You’re being alarmist.” “You’re making something out of nothing.” “It’s just the flu. It’s not serious.” Those people may have had good intentions, but they aren’t me. Their comments could have made me doubt myself. Or made me feel embarrassed or foolish for being alarmed and insistent on acting. And if I’d listened to those voices and denied my intuition on this, my son would have likely died in the mountains. Because as we later came to learn he caught a virus that caused his heart to give out. It was a time bomb just waiting to go off. And so, if I’d listened to those folks, and not my gut, that would have been the end of the story, and I would have had to live with the guilt of knowing that I felt in my heart that something was deeply wrong, but I hadn’t had the courage or trust in myself to say or do anything about it. I thank God that wasn’t the case.

Now I know some of you may think, well that’s you. You’re different. Maybe you’re stronger than me or you have a weird clairvoyance or something that I don’t have. I don’t believe that. I’m no different than you. I’m sure there have been times in your life when you had a knowing or an uncomfortable feeling or a hunch about something or someone only to find out after the fact that you were right.

Like you, I too have spent much of my life being conditioned by a culture that wants to limit me and convince me to distrust myself and hold myself back. Why? Because I’m so much easier to manipulate and control that way.

The only difference between us is that I’ve learned to see the ways I’ve been limited. I’ve learned to block out the noise from the world around me so I can listen within, trust me more, and most importantly to act on that info and that alone. In a nutshell, I changed my relationship with myself. I mentally reprogrammed and tapped into the power that was always inside me. I do me. I know I’m a good person and that’s enough. I don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks about it. I’m free and at peace with me as I am.

So, the only difference between us, if there’s a difference, is that I may be just a couple steps ahead on this journey. My hope in sharing this is that I can light a path to help guide you.

You have everything you need inside you right now. You just need to learn to trust and believe in yourself more. And I promise you, when you make this change every area of your life will improve.

If what I say resonates with you follow me here. I’ll give you my best thoughts and guidance for ways in which you can start to make the mental shift to feel stronger, safer and freer now.

And if you know someone who you think needs to hear this message I hope you’ll share.

xo Jeanine

Share
